and lake area are perfect for families to enjoy a barbecue,
picnic, feed ducks or just to throw a ball around. A cycle
track surrounding the beautiful lake is just the place to take
off those trainer wheels for the first time.
Arrive early in the Southern Highlands and have a hearty
breakfast at the Sturt Café and Art Gallery on Range Road,
or relax and indulge with a decent coffee at one of the many
cafés on Bowral Road.
Need exercise? The Box Vale track starts from the car park
on the right hand side of the Old Hume Highway as you
head south towards Berrima. The track can be as long or
as short as you like. Well signposted and maintained, you
will cross the Nattai Creek before you reach the old Box
Vale Railway line. A good 1.5 hours walk one way, the trail
will take you through cuttings named Casuarina, Boulder
and Fern and a tunnel through which coal was originally
transported. A lovely lookout over the Nattai River valley will
soothe the spirit as you gaze towards the Blue Mountains.
There are well-established wineries on the west side of the
Southern Highlands, each making their own award-winning
wines. Watch for the signs off the Old Hume Highway, and
spend the day tasting some of the region's finest wines while
enjoying a sumptuous meal, coffee or cake at their cellar
There are some old iron works in a carpark in Mittagong --
