Following on from its award-winning 2009 event, the
Bundanoon community is getting ready for the biggest
"It's natural to think after last year, we have to try and make
this one better," Graham Whisker said.
Mr Whisker is the chairperson of the Bundanoon
Winterfest Steering Committee, which led the festival to
win the Event category at the 2009 Southern Highlands
But the success hasn't gone to Mr Whisker's head.
"The key is to ask how well we're involving the Southern
Highlands in taking part in the Winterfest?" he said.
"There were many things we did last year that didn't work.
We're aiming to fix that this year."
The range of activities available is extensive, with more
than 50 different activities listed for the two-week festival.
If you're passionate about the great outdoors, then sign up
for one of Derek Davies' Chook Care workshops, or take a
bike ride through Bundanoon's scenic trails, or walk through
the mesmerising Glow Worm Glen.
But if Bundanoon's winter climes is not your cup of tea, then
head indoors for a little wine tasting, learn how engines work
with Peter Stewart, or find inner peace with a meditation
"The aim is to get everyone in the community to say there
is at least one thing in the schedule they'd like to go to," Mr
"But this is by far the most extensive timetable of activities
we've ever had. Most events are free, although some are
only available by registration.
"Derek Davies' first Chook Care workshop was so popular
that we had 43 people turn up for the first session. So, we
had to bring in some way to keep the groups small."
When grilled about his personal pick, Mr Whisker refused
to be drawn in. But he did say what he enjoyed most about
Winterfest. "The one thing I like is how people come out of
the woodwork to support their community," he said.
"More than that, I'm amazed at the attention we get from
people who come to the Highlands just for the Winterfest.
We have events all day and night for 17 days, and it
happens that school holidays will coincide with the festival,
so things look positive going forward."
The Bundanoon Winterfest runs throughout the Bundanoon
township from June 28 to July 18. For more information, visit
